When my husband Jake and I closed on our first real house three years ago, I was over the moon.
After a decade in cramped apartments, we finally had a full kitchen, three bedrooms, and a backyard for the kids. It felt like we’d made it.
But the honeymoon lasted exactly two weeks.
That’s when I realized the kitchen—the heart of any home—was a disaster. The previous owners had lived there for 30 years and apparently never heard of deep cleaning. The stove was covered in what looked like fossilized grease. The oven interior? I didn’t even want to look.
I told myself: “I’m a capable woman. I raised two kids. I can handle a dirty kitchen.”
So I raided Target’s cleaning aisle. I came home with industrial degreasers, heavy-duty oven cleaner, steel wool, those blue scrub sponges, and thick rubber gloves that went up to my elbows.
I spent my entire Saturday scrubbing.
And scrubbing.
And scrubbing some more.
My hands were raw. My back was screaming. And the stove? Still sticky.
I ran my finger across the burner area an hour after “finishing,” and it came back greasy. Like I’d done nothing at all.
I nearly cried.
